Golf Lessons at the South Suburban Golf Course

South Suburban Golf Course is proud to offer private, semi-private, and group lessons for players of all abilities and desires in improving their golf game. All our instructors are PGA of America members or apprentices, LPGA of America members, or have had more than five years personal experience in providing golf lessons. 

Our professional’s emphasis is on providing an enjoyable learning experience designed to fit the student’s learning style. We provide lessons for beginning players to the most experienced players. All our instructors provide special rates for junior players.

South Suburban Golf Course Golf Professionals

Todd R. Marley, PGA Class ‘A’ Certified Head Golf Professional

Todd has been teaching golf to women, juniors and men since 1988. He believes the golf swing should be simple and compact. Players should focus on basic fundamentals and work on grip, posture, alignment, balance, rotation, consistent solid contact, accuracy and follow through. Practice is a must and golfers should focus on one or two swing throughs at a time. His passion is working with juniors and teaching them to learn, love and respect the game. He has been a PGA Junior League Coach since 2015 and it has been a very rewarding experience for him. He has worked with high school players and college players for the last seven years.

Tony Allen, PGA ‘Class A’ 1st Assistant Golf Professional

Tony has been a member in the PGA since 1998 and has been teaching golf for over 20 years. He wants his students to learn the fundamentals and understand them. His students should learn how to swing the club and not hit the ball, to keep it simple and don’t overthink what they are trying to do.

Jim Long, PGA ‘Class A’ Assistant Golf Professional

Jim has been a PGA member since 1985 and teaching golf since 1980. He has been a golf professional at South Suburban since 2006. He holds a B.S. in Education from CSU Pueblo. His philosophy is to keep instruction as simple as possible in order for students to have fun.

Scott Matthews, PGA ‘Class A’ Assistant Golf Professional

Scott has been a PGA golf professional since 2004 and is committed to helping his students achieve a greater enjoyment of the game. Whether they are just being introduced to the game or training for high level tournament play, he can help them realize their golfing goals. He believes that strong emphasis should be placed on the importance of pre-swing fundamentals. The proper grip, aim, stance, balance, posture, alignment and ball position are the foundation and basis of any good golf swing.He also teaches his students how to handle the mental game, course management, short game, putting and how to practice properly.

Mary Temple, LPGA Golf Professional

Mary has been employed at SSGC since 2001. She is a LPGA Golf Professional. Her teaching career began in 2007. Understanding the golf swing has always been a passion of hers.She has had the benefit of learning and teaching golf under some very knowledgeable PGA teaching professionals.She derives a lot of satisfaction from the improvement of her student’s golf game.

Walter Schlomer, PGA Apprentice Assistant Golf Professional

Walter has been teaching and coaching golf to beginners and aspiring professionals for twenty years. He has taught over 3,000 beginners and mentored players for both the Men’s and Women’s U.S. Open Championships.

Mike Paavilainen, PGA Apprentice Assistant Golf Professional

Mike began teaching golf at SSGC in 2008. He preaches the fundamentals of golf – grip, aim and setup. His students are from all skill levels and experiences. Mike is a 2006 graduate of the Golf Academy of America completing an Applied Associate of Business degree with emphasis on golf complex management and golf operations. He is also certified in golf instruction, tournament operations and club repair/fitting.

Kevin Simpson, PGA Apprentice Assistant Golf Professional

Kevin started in golf as a mentor in the Denver’s First Tee Program (educating and inspiring youth academically, socially, and physically through the game of golf) in 2001 and worked with their golf instructors daily. He taught there for ten years and became a certified first tee coach, and teacher in 2011 and was also the lead instructor. He was the head golf coach at Denver West High School 2012 – 2013 and was named Denver Public Schools Coach of the Year. He has been teaching students ages 4 - 75 at South Suburban Golf Course since 2012. He is one year away from completing his PGA ‘Class A’ schooling. Teaching golf is a passion of his and he plans to continue to learn and grow within the PGA.

Chris Wilson, Assistant Golf Professional

Chris has been playing golf for 30 years and teaching for the last seven. He has been a Junior Camp instructor for the past four years. His philosophy is to start with good fundamentals with posture, grip and alignment being the most important. He teaches by looking at the ball flight and working backwards. Golf is truly a game played from 100 yards since a majority of strokes are taken from there. He also uses videos during his lessons since some students respond better when they can see their own swing.

Patty Harmon, Assistant Golf Professional

Patty has been teaching golf for 17 years. She was the first girl’s golf coach at Arapahoe High School and grew the team from four players to 16 players in three seasons. She teaches all levels of golfers with an emphasis on women and children. She also teaches golfers that have physical limitations.She would love to share her passion of golf with everyone.
