Celebrate like it's 1985 for Park and Recreation Month!
July is National Park and Recreation Month!
The National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA), established July as Park and Recreation Month in 1985 to highlight the vital role local parks and recreation agencies play in conservation, health and wellness, and social equity efforts in communities all across the country.
This year marks 30 years of Park and Recreation Month, and in celebration NRPA, and South Suburban are encouraging everyone to throw it back to the 80s at their local parks and recreation facilities. Wear your best 80s gear to your favorite drop-in fitness class or enjoy an 80s music jam session in your nearest park. Most importantly, just get out to enjoy your local parks and recreation for yourself.
Nationally, NRPA is celebrating by sharing the impact parks and recreation has in all of our lives by releasing a short animated video titled the “Power of Parks.”
We've planned several exciting Park and Recreation Month 80s-themed activities for July and have created an events calendar for the entire month.
But of course, that's only a fraction of the programs, classes and events we have going on this month and every month. Visit our online catalog, daily events calendar, and facility schedules to discover what's happening across the District.
We'd love to see how you're celebrating parks and recreation month. Tag us in your parks and recreation posts on Facebook,Twitter or Instagram and use the hashtag #JulyPRM30.
