Diverting Waste, Reducing Emissions, and Improving Soil through Composting

As part of our commitment to identify and apply sustainable practices throughout the District, the Sustainability Committee has been exploring the feasibility of a waste disposal alternative that will divert biodegradable waste from landfills. Composting food scraps cuts back on biomass taking up space in landfills, reduces methane emissions, and enriches local soil with nutrient-rich planting material. With these great benefits in mind, South Suburban recently launched a composting pilot project in partnership with Compost Colorado at two South Suburban facilities.

In addition to composting food waste at these facilities, all South Suburban staff members have been invited to participate in the composting program by bringing food waste from home and disposing of it at either of the facilities where composting services are available.
